HOW ASTHMA IS DIAGNOSED
The diagnosis of asthma actually depends on various factors that include a detailed medical history report, asthma symptoms, a physical exam, and in the end your overall health and the test results.
First, your doctor will discuss with you about your medical history before he/she can perform a physical exam. He/she may ask for an X-Ray test and a lung function test after which he/she can see how to go forward with the diagnosis. If you are having problems with breathing on a regular basis, then you should consult a doctor immediately without wasting time.
Let us read about the common ways of diagnosing asthma:
- Medical History-
First, the doctor will ask you certain questions to understand your symptoms and problems. He/she might dig deeper into your family’s medical history and any current problems that you are facing. If you have symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, pain in your chest, then this might be the case of initial stages of asthma. It includes all the history of your allergies, which might be the reason to increase your chance of asthma. You should also inform your doctor of any kind of exposure to smoking, dust particles, etc.
- Physical Exam-
If you are diagnosed with asthma symptoms, then he/she will ask for a physical exam. Physical exam consists of checking the eyes, chest, nose, throat, skin, lungs and ears. The test includes a lung function test that will reveal how well your lung is exhaling the air. An X-Ray of your lungs and sinuses also help examine your condition better. This helps the doctor to make a review about the seriousness of asthma that you are suffering from.
- Lung Function Tests-
To confirm that you are suffering from asthma, your doctor will ask you to take one more test, which is called Lung Function Test. It is generally taken after your doctor tests your lungs’ functionality with the help of a bronchodilator. If observed that your breathing improves with the help of that, then you definitely are suffering from asthma. After this, the doctor prescribes a few medicines.
It is difficult to diagnose breathing problems, as it asthma can be confused with other conditions. If asthma exists with some other condition that can affect your breathing, then it can complicate things. It is advised to get you diagnosed from professional doctors.
